A South Riding family can thank their dog for escaping a fire early Sunday in their house, a Washington TV station reported Monday. About an hour before sunrise on Sunday, two adults and a child were awakened and alerted to the fire by the family's 14-year-old dog , according to WUSA Channel 9. The home's smoke alarms then went off and confirmed the fire, and the family evacuated the structure.

The plague of graffiti in the area continued last weekend, as a vandal or vandals spray-painted a home, a business and two vehicles in a neighborhood near the Sterling Plaza shopping center. Two incidents occurred on Essex Square in Sterling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Saturday, March 28, starting at 7:30 p.m. "In the past several years, DUI arrests and DUI-related crashes have steadily declined through the efforts of local, regional and national educational and enforcement campaigns to curb drunk driving," Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said in a statement. "In Loudoun County, DUI-related arrests declined 12.6 percent between 2010 and 2013, a trend similar to the 17.2 percent decline in DUI arrests observed by law enforcement agencies throughout the country," he added.
